Finding True Peace

When the storms of life roll in, anxiety and worry may flood our hearts. What is going to happen?

Sometimes, we don’t get immediate rescue. Our circumstances don’t change as quickly as we want. In the midst of the storm, we need a calmness that rules in our hearts. A stillness amidst all the chaos. A confident and secure peace.

In John 14:27, Jesus tells His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (ESV).

Jesus offers peace because He is peace. Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace. This is essential to our understanding and experience of true peace. It has everything to do with who Jesus is and what He has done.

Through His death and resurrection, Christ has purchased us and transformed our standing before God. We, though once enemies of God, now have peace with Him through Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1-10). Because of what Jesus has done, standing in our place and paying the debt that we owed, we are justified by Christ and are now children of God. There is no greater peace than having peace with God.

Jesus also offers us His peace because He has given us Himself. It is only through knowing Jesus, accepting Him as Savior and Lord of our lives, and surrendering to Him, that we find true peace. The peace of God, that surpasses all understanding, guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). This is fully ours in Christ.

On the other hand, Jesus warns that the world does not give us peace. He says God does not give to us like the world gives. What the world gives is fleeting and empty.

Your circumstances, your relationships, even your own performance—none of these will ever give you true peace.

Friend, you don’t have to wait until the storms settle. Peace can still be found, even here. Jesus alone quiets our anxious hearts with His love (Zephaniah 3:17). True peace is found in Him, the Prince of Peace, who forever reigns.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for giving me Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Quiet my anxious heart with Your love. Help me to trust that You are always with me and sovereign over all things.
