Good and Gracious Words

Lessons from Proverbs on Encouragement

When we experience seasons of challenge, sometimes the truth we have come to know through Christ can seem silent. We know God is with us, but we doubt. We believe that He hears our prayers, but we grow weary. 

We repeat the truth of the Gospel to ourselves—the truth that has transformed our lives—and yet, our hearts can feel dull.

Sometimes our trials can cloud the reality of the Gospel. When our own eyes struggle to see the glorious hope we have in Christ, we need the help of others.

We cannot walk alone in the faith, and we are not meant to. We need fellowship, accountability, and care that comes from other believers. Although we may face trials that seem hopeless, there is a specific blessing that comes through the encouragement of others.

Two verses from the book of Proverbs speak simply yet strongly on the power of our words when it comes to encouragement.

First, in Proverbs 12:25:

“Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down,

    but a good word makes him glad” (ESV).

Trials can bring about an anxiety that is disorienting and burdensome. And yet, a simple word of encouragement from someone can bring joy into our hearts. A good word can break through the darkness and bring light.

Similarly, in Proverbs 16:24:

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb,

    sweetness to the soul and health to the body” (ESV).

The loving and kind words of another can be reviving to our weary hearts. When we are downcast or feel defeated in the midst of trial, the encouragement of another can build us back up.

Can you think about a time in your life that seemed hopeless, and the kindness of another blessed you?

Or maybe you remember a time when a sister faced a challenge, and you were able to offer her hope.

It is exactly in times like these when the beauty of the Church shines. The encouragement of other believers can bolster our own faith in amazing ways.

There is a saying that kind words cost little but mean much. We often have little idea of how much a kind word can uplift someone’s heart.

Let us be proactive and intentional in encouraging each other. May our words be good and gracious.
