He Will Never Cast You Out

A Devotional on John 6:37

In the face of sin, trial, and despair, our hearts are prone to discouragement and doubt. Pain and disappointment will leave us spiraling.

I can’t believe I messed up again.

Will this get any better?

I give up.

God – have You given up on me?

Our hearts need an anchor.

Thanks be to God, we can come to His Word, living and active, and be reminded of our Good Father. God’s Word, full of truth and promises, realigns and refreshes our hearts.

In John 6:37, Jesus says “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out” (ESV).

What a clear and heart-lifting promise! First, we see that it is the Father that initiates and sustains. It is the Father that gives to the Son. In the next verses, Jesus says that it is the will of the Father that He came to accomplish. God the Father is the initiator.

Next, there is a guarantee that those whom the Father gives to the Son will come to the Son. Since it is God who initiates, it is God who carries this out. It is by His power and His will that those whom He chooses come to Him, because He is the very One who prompts and changes our hearts.

Finally, Jesus says that those whom the Father has given Him, He will never cast out. Ever. Because God has set His affection on you, He has sealed you as His child forever. He has adopted you as His own. He will never remove His love from you – there is nothing more sure of that.

Friend, the reason we can rest and trust in these promises of God is because they are all based on Him, not on us.

God reveals Himself to us. God convicts our hearts. God opens our eyes to the Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ alone. It is God’s Spirit in us that gives us the grace and strength to turn from sin, love others, and walk in obedience. 

And it is God who loves you – more than you can ever love Him. His love is unconditional. No matter how many times you fall, He lifts you up again. God welcomes repentant hearts because His love and grace abound.

Jesus welcomes you. His heart is for you. And He will never cast you out.
